Panera Prices: The Same Bagel Is $1.69 And $3.39

Not a sale, not a size difference, not a typo. The same bagel, in the same week, at two Panera cafes in the same country. We had one price for 43 items at each of 2,238 US cafes, so for once this is checkable rather than anecdotal, and the answer is that there is no such thing as the price of a Panera item.

Two identical Panera orders side by side with two different receipts
The same order, twice. Which cafe you walk into decides what it costs.

What the receipts say

  • 33 of 43 items vary by half again or more Between the cheapest cafe selling it and the dearest. The median item is 54% apart end to end.
  • $5.90 more for the same lunch in Washington A soup, a sandwich and a coffee: $17.87 in Maryland, $23.77 in Washington. 33% more.
  • 25.9% of the dearest cafes sit at an unusual site Airports, hospitals, campuses and service areas are only 11.6% of the network, and 10.1% of the cheapest end.

There is no Panera price

Search for what a Panera sandwich costs and every result gives you a number. One number, stated flatly, as though somebody somewhere charges it. Nobody does. Panera sets prices cafe by cafe, and a single national figure is an average of prices that differ at every address, which means it is a number charged at no till in the country.

That is easy to assert and harder to show, and showing it needs a price for the same item at a lot of individual cafes rather than a state average or a sample. This snapshot has one: 43 items, each priced at 2,238 of the 2,239 US bakery-cafes, read in July 2026.

The tight end is worth seeing too, because it is not tight. These are the 5 items that vary least of everything measured: Southwest Chile Lime Ranch With Chicken at +43%, Southwest Chicken Caesar Salad at +43%, Chipotle Chicken Egg & Avocado at +44%, Bacon Mac & Cheese at +44%, Green Goddess Cobb at +46%. There is no item on this menu that costs the same everywhere.

What that looks like for the soup everyone orders

Broccoli Cheddar is the item people arrive looking for, so it is the fairest one to take apart. Across 2,233 cafes it runs $4.79 to $8.99, a difference of 88%.

The cheapest is Auburn University - Ralph Brown Draughon Library in Auburn, AL. The dearest is Overlook Medical Center - Medical Arts Center II (1st Floor Lobby) in Summit, NJ. A university library and a hospital lobby, and that pairing is not a coincidence, which is the next section.

Broccoli Cheddar: $4.79 at a university library, $8.99 in a hospital lobby.

Worth knowing before you compare: that soup is also the one whose bread bowl version carries Panera's own high sodium flag while the cup and bowl carry nothing. The labels Panera writes on its own food goes through all of them.

The dear end is not random

Read the most expensive cafes by name and the same kinds of address keep appearing: a service area on an interstate, a medical centre lobby, an airport terminal, a cafe beside a theme park. Places you cannot easily walk out of.

That is checkable rather than impressionistic. Counting every cafe whose name says it sits at an airport, a hospital, a university, a service area or a plaza:

Measured across all 43 priced items, taking the 20 cheapest and 20 dearest cafes for each.
Where the cafe is Share
Of all 2,239 US cafes 11.6%
Of the 20 cheapest cafes per item 10.1%
Of the 20 dearest cafes per item 25.9%

One cafe in nine sits at one of those addresses. At the expensive end it is better than one in four, and at the cheap end it is barely one in ten. The effect is not subtle and it does not need a theory: a captive queue in a terminal or a hospital does not walk somewhere else.

Panera prices by state, on one lunch

Individual cafes are the sharpest way to see this, but they are hard to plan around. So here is the same thing at the level you can actually act on: one soup, one sandwich and one coffee, priced at the median cafe in every state with at least five of them. Broccoli Cheddar Soup, Toasted Frontega Chicken and Hot Coffee, nationally $20.37.

None of this is about inflation. Restaurant prices do move year on year, and the USDA food price outlook tracks that across the whole sector. What is on this page is different: every figure was read in the same week, so the gaps below are not one cafe having raised its prices earlier than another. They are what two cafes were charging on the same day.

Maryland to Washington is $5.90 on one lunch, which is 33% more for the same three things. Buy the whole 43-item basket this site tracks and the gap between the cheapest and dearest state is $90.60: $291.47 in Maryland against $382.07 in Oregon.

What this does not tell you

Not why

Rent, local wages, franchise terms and a captive queue are all reasonable explanations for a dearer cafe and not one of them is in these records. This piece shows the spread and the kind of address it clusters at. It does not claim to know what any operator was thinking.

A snapshot, not a till

Prices were read in July 2026. A cafe can change them the next morning. The figures are what was being charged then, and the pattern rather than any single number is the part that lasts.

43 items, not the whole menu

Per-cafe prices exist for 43 items. The rest of the menu carries a national range instead, which is why the item pages show a range and a state table rather than a single figure.

44 states, not fifty

A state needs at least five cafes to be ranked here. Below that a median describes a handful of addresses rather than a state, and publishing it would look like a fact while being closer to an accident.

Questions people ask about Panera prices

Why are Panera prices different at different locations?

Panera sets prices per cafe rather than nationally, so the same item costs different amounts at different addresses. Across the 43 items priced cafe by cafe in this snapshot, 33 vary by half again or more between their cheapest and dearest cafe, and the median gap is 54%. What the data cannot tell you is why any one cafe charges what it does: rent, wages, franchise terms and captive footfall are all plausible and none of them is in the records.

How much do Panera prices vary between cafes?

More than most people expect. The widest is the Asiago Cheese Bagel, $1.69 at Auburn University - Ralph Brown Draughon Library and $3.39 at Anaheim - Harbor Blvd near Disney Way, which is exactly double. 3 of the 43 items measured double or better, and the typical item is 54% dearer at its most expensive cafe than at its cheapest.

Which state has the cheapest Panera?

Of the 44 states with enough cafes to rank, Maryland is cheapest for the three-item lunch used here, at $17.87 against a national $20.37. Washington is dearest at $23.77. That is a gap of $5.90, or 33% more for the same soup, sandwich and coffee.

Which Panera locations are most expensive?

Cafes at what this piece calls an unusual site: an airport, a hospital, a university, a service area or a plaza. They are 11.6% of the 2,239 US cafes but 25.9% of the twenty dearest cafes for a given item, and only 10.1% of the twenty cheapest. Read the extremes by name and it shows without the arithmetic: a service area on the I-87, a medical centre lobby, a cafe next to a theme park.

Is there one national Panera price?

There is not, and you will not find one here. Any single figure for a Panera item is an average of prices that differ at every address, which is why every item page on this site carries a range and a state table rather than one number.

How much is Panera Broccoli Cheddar Soup?

It depends entirely on where you buy it. Across 2,233 cafes selling it, the cheapest charges $4.79 and the dearest $8.99, a difference of 88%. The typical price is $5.29.

Where do these prices come from?

From a reading of all 2,239 US Panera bakery-cafes taken in July 2026, which records one price per item per cafe. Nothing here is estimated or averaged from a sample. The method and the limits are set out on the methodology page.

Do Panera prices change often?

A cafe can change its prices whenever it likes, so treat every figure here as what was being charged when the snapshot was taken, in July 2026, rather than as today's till price. The pattern, that prices differ by address and that unusual sites sit at the dear end, is the durable part.
