Which Cafes Actually Have One
Barely half. We counted every US bakery-cafe in our store snapshot and 1,159 of 2,239 have a drive-thru, which leaves 1,080 that do not. The share swings hard by state, from 86% in Kentucky to 20% in Massachusetts, so the nearest Panera is close to a coin flip. The table below has every state.

Each method comes with a different wait time. Two of them are genuinely fast. One is not.
Pull up to the menu board, order through the speaker, pay at the first window, collect your food at the second. Because Panera prepares food fresh to order, this takes longer than typical fast food.

One queue, served in order
The order ahead of you is your wait too
Order through the Panera app and select drive-thru pickup. Pull into the dedicated Rapid Pick-Up lane. Staff hands your packaged order through the window. No menu, no speaker, no back and forth.

Food is already made
Even at locations with a drive-thru, walking inside is often fastest. Order on the app, park, walk in, grab your bag off the labeled shelf, and leave. No car queue, no window wait.

Counted from 2,239 US bakery-cafes. The share is what matters more than the count: a state with many cafes and few lanes is a state where you should check before driving. Each row links to that state's cafe list.

Share is left blank where a state has fewer than five cafes, because one store either side moves it twenty points and the number stops meaning anything. District of Columbia has no drive-thru in the snapshot at all.
Only states with twenty or more cafes appear in these two lists, for the same reason the share column is blank on the small ones.
A drive-thru is the rarest of the collection options except one. Counted across the same 2,239 cafes, this is how common each is, and the surprise is at the bottom.

59 of 2,239 cafes
Rapid Pick-Up is the one option that is almost everywhere, which makes it the real answer when your nearest cafe has no lane. Curbside is the opposite: 59 cafes in the whole country, and not something to plan a trip around.
These hold their shape in the car, come in one hand, and do not need a table to eat. Each one is available at the window.
Foil-pressed, holds its shape in the car
Ciabatta holds together for easy one-hand eating
Toasted sourdough stays firm on the road
Sealed lid, and it travels better than anything on a plate
Ready in seconds, zero wait at the window
Toss it in the bag, eat it whenever you want
Neither option is always faster. The right choice depends on what you ordered, the time of day, and whether your store has a Rapid Pick-Up lane.
You have kids in car seats and unloading is a hassle
It is raining or too cold to park and walk
You ordered a simple bakery item or coffee
The Rapid Pick-Up drive-thru lane is available
You are visiting outside the busy lunch hour
You placed your order on the app before you left
The drive-thru line is long and your order is waiting on the pickup shelf
You ordered a soup in a bread bowl (hard to pass through a window)
Your order has 4 or more bags and boxes
You have a Sip Club subscription and want the self-serve station
Your location does not have a Rapid Pick-Up lane
You need to pick up a catering or group order
Not every Panera has a drive-thru. Here are three ways to confirm before you drive over.
Choose the cafe in the app and check its details, which show the services that cafe offers and the hours it files.
Get the app guideSearch 'Panera Bread drive-thru near me.' Many listings note a drive-thru among the cafe's features, and the listing shows the hours the cafe has posted.
How to check hoursStill unsure? Call the store. Staff can confirm whether the Rapid Pick-Up drive-thru lane is active at that specific location before you make the trip.
Find store numbersCheck a cafe before you drive
Our hours page lists a phone number for every US cafe, so you can ask whether it has a drive-thru and when it is open.
None of these is a timing we measured. They are the things that decide whether you queue at all.
Place your order through the Panera app while you are still at home or in the office. Select drive-thru pickup. By the time you arrive, your food is already packaged and waiting. You skip the menu board, the speaker, and the entire ordering process.
Lunchtime is the busiest part of the day at many cafes. Ordering in the app for a pickup time before the busiest stretch keeps you ahead of the queue rather than in it, which is the part of this you control.
You cannot access the self-serve station from your car. But you can order a Sip Club drink through the app and have staff prepare it. Just add a free drink to your app order and it will be in the bag at the window.
Check the MyPanera tab in the app for available rewards before placing your order. A reward you have already earned, or an offer on your account, is easy to forget, and offers carry expiry dates.
If you are ordering at the speaker instead of the app, keep it simple. A bagel, coffee, or cookie is ready in seconds. Complex salads with modifications are built to order and hold up the line behind you.
If the drive-thru line is long and you ordered ahead, park and walk inside. Collecting from the Rapid Pick-Up shelf skips the queue, while sitting in the line means waiting for every order ahead of you.
Quick answers about Panera drive-thru availability, menu options, wait times, and Rapid Pick-Up.
About half of them do. We counted 1,159 of the 2,239 US bakery-cafes in our store snapshot with a drive-thru, which is 52%. That means 1,080 cafes have no lane at all, so it is worth checking your own before you drive over rather than assuming.
1,159, out of 2,239. Panera adds lanes to new builds and to remodels, so the share climbs slowly, but it has never been the default: more than a thousand cafes are walk-in only. 48 of the 49 states and territories we hold cafes for have at least one.
Florida (99), Texas (83), Ohio (74) lead on count, because they have the most cafes. On share it is a different list: Kentucky has a lane at 86% of its 35 cafes, while Massachusetts manages 20% of 64. The table above has every state.
The table above is the fastest way to see whether your state has many or few, and each row links to that state's cafe list. In the Panera app, open Locations and the drive-thru cafes carry a car icon on the listing. Do not rely on a search result alone: with only 52% of cafes fitted, the nearest Panera is close to a coin flip.
Yes. The drive-thru window serves the same menu as the counter, including soups, salads, warm bowls and bakery, and the same MyPanera account and rewards apply. What the lane cannot do is anything that needs a kiosk or a table, so a Rapid Pick-Up order placed for a table is not collectable at the window.
We do not publish a figure for this, because we cannot measure it and Panera does not release one. Anyone quoting you minutes by hour of day has estimated them. What we can say is structural: the lane is one queue served in order, so a long order ahead of you is your wait too, and a Rapid Pick-Up order collected inside skips the queue entirely.
It is the order-ahead shelf you collect from without queueing, and it is the closest thing Panera has to a universal option: 2,229 of 2,239 cafes offer it, which is 100%. If your nearest cafe has no drive-thru, this is the alternative worth using.
Rarely. Curbside is the least common option Panera runs: 59 cafes out of 2,239, 2.6%. It is not a fallback you can count on, and it is far rarer than most people assume from the pandemic years when it was widespread.
At most cafes the window opens and closes with the dining room, so the drive-thru is not a late-night option the way it is at some chains. Hours vary by location rather than by rule, which is why our opening hours page lists them cafe by cafe instead of quoting one national time.
Drive-thru availability is recorded per cafe in our directory; confirm with the cafe
The drive-thru counts in this guide come from the service flags in our cafe snapshot. We hold no wait-time figures, so the timing tips are general advice rather than measurements. Always check your cafe in the Panera app or on our hours page before heading out.
