The Menu, Measured

Panera's Bread Bowl Is 73% Bread. Here Is the Arithmetic.

Every soup Panera serves in a bread bowl is also sold in a cup. Subtract one from the other and what is left is the sourdough: 648 calories and $3.49, before a spoonful of soup goes in.

There is a moment, somewhere near the bottom of a Panera bread bowl, when you realise the soup ran out a while ago and you are just eating bread. That moment is not an accident of appetite. It is the product.

The Panera Bread bread bowl has been on the menu for decades and it is one of the few things the chain is genuinely known for. What it is not, in any of the places that describe it, is measured. So we measured it: we took the menu at 2,231 US bakery-cafes, found every soup sold both in a cup and in a bread bowl, and put the two side by side.

All 9 soups Panera serves in a bread bowl are also sold in a cup, at the same cafes, on the same day. That makes the comparison unusually clean. The difference between the two figures is not an estimate of the bread. It is the bread.

What Is Actually in a Panera Bread Bowl

Panera sells its soups at three sizes, and the jump between the second and the third is not a jump in soup. A bowl holds more soup than a cup. A bread bowl holds roughly a cup's worth, inside about four servings of bread.

Panera soup sizes, averaged across every soup sold at that size.
SizeSoups soldAverage priceAverage calories
Cup 13 $5.85 244
Bowl 7 $8.60 289
Bread bowl 9 $9.47 911

Read the three rows, not the gaps between them: each average covers a different set of soups, because not every soup is sold at every size. The comparison that holds is soup by soup, and that is the next table.

Panera Bread Bowl Soup: All 9, Ranked by How Much Is Bread

Here is the finding that surprised us. Because the bowl is a constant and the soup is not, the lighter the soup you choose, the more of your meal is sourdough. Order the lightest soup on the menu in a bread bowl and you have ordered, in effect, a loaf with a garnish.

The Panera Sourdough Bread Bowl, Sold on Its Own

Every number above is a subtraction, and a subtraction invites the obvious objection: how do you know the difference is all bread, and not a larger portion of soup hiding inside it?

Because Panera answers that itself. The Sourdough Bread Bowl is a menu item you can buy empty, and Panera prints its calorie count: 650. Our subtraction across all 9 soups gives 648. Two calories apart, arrived at from opposite directions.

That empty bowl costs about $3.06. Upgrading a cup to a bread bowl costs $3.49. So you pay roughly $0.43 for the service of having the soup poured into it, which is either a bargain or an insult depending on your mood.

For scale: a serving of Panera's ordinary bread is 140 to 190 calories. The bowl is 650. You are not having bread with your soup. You are having soup with your bread.

How Much Is a Bread Bowl at Panera?

There is no single answer, and anyone who gives you one is guessing. Franchise owners set their own prices, so the same bread bowl runs from $7.79 to $12.99 depending which cafe you walk into. That is a 67% spread on one product.

What does hold steady is the upgrade. Across the soups, choosing the bread bowl over the cup costs $3.49 on average, and for most of them it is exactly $3.72. The soups guide carries the full price list at all three sizes, and the prices by location guide shows how far prices move between states.

Mac and Cheese in a Bread Bowl at Panera

The mac is the exception to everything above, and the reason is arithmetic rather than opinion. Every soup on the list is lighter than the bowl it sits in. The mac is not.

The mac and cheese in a bread bowl Panera serves starts life as a 490-calorie cup and arrives at 1,140. The Bacon Mac & Cheese version reaches 1,170, which makes it the single heaviest thing you can order in a bread bowl at Panera. It is also the only pairing where the bread is the minority partner, at 57%.

Where a Bread Bowl Sits on the Rest of the Menu

Numbers like 1,170 mean very little without something to put them against, so here is the context. Panera's menu holds 287 priced items with a calorie count. Exactly 1 of them is heavier than a Bacon Mac & Cheese in a bread bowl.

Put another way: order the heaviest bread bowl on the menu and you have ordered the second heaviest item Panera sells. Not the second heaviest soup. The second heaviest anything.

None of which makes it a bad order. It makes it a large one, and the useful thing is to know that before the tray arrives rather than three quarters of the way down the bowl. Our lighter options guide has the other end of the same menu, where 55 meals come in under 500 calories.

How to Order It, If You Want the Bread to Count for Something

Pair it with the heaviest soup, not the lightest

This is backwards from the usual advice and it follows from the table. The bowl costs you 650 calories whatever goes in it, so the more soup you get for that fixed cost, the better the trade. Black Bean Soup at 88% bread is the worst use of a bread bowl on the menu.

Or buy the bowl and the cup separately

The empty Sourdough Bread Bowl is about $3.06 and a cup of soup is around $5.85. Ordered apart you can eat half the bread, take the rest home, and pay roughly what the combined dish costs anyway.

Leaving the bowl does not halve it

It removes the 650 calories of sourdough and leaves you the cup portion, which is what the cup costs $5.85 for. If you were never going to eat the bread, the bread bowl was the expensive way to buy a cup.

Check the price where you are

$7.79 to $12.99 is a real spread, not a rounding error, and it does not track with anything you can see from outside. The figures here are national averages.

Panera Bread Bowl Questions, Answered From the Menu Data

How many calories are in a Panera bread bowl?

The bread on its own is 650 calories, which Panera confirms by selling the empty Sourdough Bread Bowl as its own item. Filled, the range runs from 740 for the Black Bean Soup up to 1,170 for the Bacon Mac & Cheese. Averaged across all 9, the bread accounts for 73% of what you eat.

How much is a bread bowl at Panera?

Choosing a bread bowl instead of a cup adds $3.49 on average. The finished dish runs from $7.79 to $12.99 depending on the cafe, because franchise owners set their own prices. The empty bowl on its own is about $3.06.

Which Panera soups come in a bread bowl?

All 9 of them: Black Bean Soup, Homestyle Chicken Noodle Soup, Bistro French Onion Soup, Cream of Chicken & Wild Rice Soup, Mexican Street Corn Chowder, Creamy Tomato Soup, Broccoli Cheddar Soup, Mac & Cheese, Bacon Mac & Cheese. Every soup Panera sells in a cup is also sold in a bread bowl, so there is nothing to check before you order.

Can you get mac and cheese in a bread bowl at Panera?

Yes, and it is the heaviest way to order anything here. Mac and cheese in a bread bowl is 1,140 calories against 490 for the cup, and the Bacon Mac & Cheese version reaches 1,170. Unlike the soups, the mac is already the heavier half of the dish: only 57% of it is bread.

Is the Panera bread bowl worth it?

As a way to buy bread, no: the upgrade costs $3.49 while Panera sells the same empty bowl for $3.06, so you pay about $0.43 more for having the soup poured into it. As a way to buy a meal, it depends whether you wanted 650 calories of sourdough, because that is most of what arrives.

Do you eat the Panera bread bowl?

That is the idea, and it is why the calorie count works the way it does. Panera counts the bowl in the figure it prints, so the number on the menu assumes you finish it. Leave the bowl and you are eating the cup portion with a lid you paid for.

Is a Panera bread bowl a lot of bread?

More than most people picture. A serving of Panera's ordinary bread runs 140 to 190 calories; the bowl is 650. It is closer to four servings of bread than to one, served as a container.

Are bread bowls available at every Panera?

Effectively yes. The soups sold this way appear at up to 2,231 US bakery-cafes in our August 2026 menu snapshot, which is nearly the whole estate.
