Prices, Calories and Bread Bowls
Broccoli Cheddar is the most widely stocked soup Panera sells, priced at 2,233 of the 2,239 US cafes we checked. This guide covers all 9 with current prices for cup, bowl and bread bowl. You will also find calorie counts, the best bread bowl pairings, and how to get the most value when ordering soup at Panera.
Panera soups are made fresh daily at each location. They do not use artificial preservatives or flavors. That is not marketing talk. It is the reason their soups taste noticeably different from most fast casual competitors.
Every Panera location makes their soups from scratch each morning. They do not reheat frozen bags. The soups start with real ingredients and are cooked on site. This is why consistency varies slightly between locations.
Panera committed to removing all artificial preservatives, sweeteners, and flavors from their food in 2017. Their soups are among the cleanest in the fast casual space. Every ingredient on the label is recognizable.
Every soup comes in cup, bowl, and bread bowl sizes. The bread bowl is a hollowed out sourdough round, and it is a cup of soup rather than a bowl that goes into it. The bread on its own is 650 calories, which is more than most of the soups it holds.
The best Panera soup depends on whether you want it light, cheap or filling, so each one below says which it is. Cup prices shown. Every one is also sold as a bowl and in a bread bowl; the full table is below.
$5.57 Most Stocked On the menu at nearly every cafe, and thick enough to hold its shape against the bread.
$5.57 Classic Smooth and tangy with a basil finish. The only soup flagged vegetarian without also being flagged high sodium.
$5.57 Lightest Chicken Shredded chicken, egg noodles and vegetables in a light broth. Far the lightest of the chicken soups.
$5.57 Sleeper Hit A thick cream base with wild rice and chicken. Heartier than the chicken noodle, creamier than the French onion.
$5.57 Cheesy Caramelised onions in beef broth under a crouton and melted cheese. The cheese cap is what makes it work in a bread bowl.
The lightest thing in the soup case and the only one Panera flags vegan, at the same cup price as the classics.
Sweet corn with chilli and lime, flagged vegetarian and gluten conscious. Priced with the five classics.
$6.38 Heaviest Shell pasta in a thick white cheddar sauce, sold from the soup station in the same three sizes. Its bowl is a double portion, so it costs more than its bread bowl.
The mac with bacon through it, and the dearest thing on the soup menu in every size.
Every soup Panera prices nationally, in all three sizes, with the calories for each and Panera’s own dietary flags. Figures are averages across our cafe snapshot, so your cafe may sit either side.

A bread bowl holds a cup of soup and adds 650 calories of bread. Averages across 2,239 US bakery-cafes.
Lightest to heaviest, per cup. A bowl is about half as much again, and a bread bowl is a cup plus 650 calories of sourdough.
The Panera bread bowl price is the same step over the cup whichever soup goes in it, so the question is which soup survives the bread. The consistency matters. Thick soups stay inside the bread. Thin soups soak through the bottom before you finish eating. Here is the breakdown.
The thick cheesy consistency stays inside the bread and does not leak through the bottom. The cheese soaks into the sourdough walls and creates a second meal when you eat the bread.
Works well because of the thick broth and melted cheese cap on top. The cheese layer helps seal the bread and prevents soaking through too quickly. A close second to Broccoli Cheddar.
The thick pasta consistency holds up well inside the bread bowl. The cheese sauce does soak into the edges but the pasta stays put. A filling combination for big appetites.
The cream base is thick enough to hold for most of the meal. Wild rice grains add texture that keeps things interesting with the bread. A solid middle-of-the-road option.
The light broth soaks through the bread bowl quickly. You lose the structural integrity before you finish the soup. Better to order this in a regular bowl with a side of bread.
Too thin and too acidic. The liquid soaks through the bottom fast and the acidity softens the bread unevenly. Save this one for the regular bowl.
A bowl of Broccoli Cheddar on its own is $8.60. You Pick Two starts at $10.59 and gives you a cup of soup and a half sandwich for less than that bowl costs.
Select the You Pick Two combo from the app or kiosk. This is the foundation of the best value soup order at Panera.
Choose any cup of soup plus a half sandwich. Frontega Chicken or Bacon Turkey Bravo give you the most food value for your money.
If you have the Sip Club ($14.99/month), your drink is free. That brings a soup, a half sandwich and a drink to the $10.59 combo price.
Small ordering decisions can make a big difference in your soup experience. These tips help you get the freshest, best value soup every time.
Not every soup is served at every cafe, and a cafe can run out of one during the day. The Panera app shows which soups your cafe is serving before you set off.
Soup orders through the Panera app qualify for Rapid Pick-Up. Your order is ready when you arrive. No waiting in the ordering line during the lunch rush.
A bowl of Broccoli Cheddar is $3.03 more than the cup for about half as much soup again, so it is worse value per calorie than the cup and better than a second cup. The two macs break the pattern: their bowls are double portions.
Every soup order comes with a piece of bread. But you can ask for extra bread slices for free. This is especially useful if you order a cup and want more bread for dipping.
Every soup order earns MyPanera rewards points. Order through the app to make sure your purchase is tracked. Points add up to free food over time.

Hearty turkey chili with beans and spices, a cold-weather soup when it is in rotation.
November to January
Thick potato soup with bacon, cheddar and chives, much like a loaded baked potato.
June to August
Light corn chowder with sweet corn kernels. Appears during the summer months and pairs well with lighter sandwich options.

Common questions about Panera soups, bread bowls, pricing, and ordering options.
Panera prices 9 soups nationally: Broccoli Cheddar, Cream of Tomato, Chicken Noodle, Chicken & Wild Rice, French Onion, Black Bean Soup, Mexican Street Corn Chowder, Mac & Cheese and Bacon Mac & Cheese. Panera counts Mac and Cheese with the soups because it is served from the same station in the same three sizes. Vegetarian Autumn Squash is no longer among them; we found it priced at 0 of the 2,239 cafes we checked.
$5.57 for any of the soups. Mac and Cheese is $6.38 and Bacon Mac and Cheese is $6.99. Those are averages across the 2,239 US bakery-cafes in our snapshot, so your own cafe may sit a little either side.
A Sourdough Bread Bowl on its own is $3.06. Ordering a soup served in one costs $3.32 to $3.72 more than the cup of the same soup, so a bread bowl of Broccoli Cheddar runs $9.29. The bread adds 650 calories, which is more than most of the soups contain.
A bowl of Broccoli Cheddar is $8.60 against $5.57 for the cup, so it costs $3.03 more for about half as much soup again: 280 calories in the cup, 420 in the bowl. The two macs are the exception. Their bowls are double portions rather than one-and-a-half, and they are priced accordingly.
Black Bean Soup, at 90 calories for a cup and flagged gluten conscious, vegan and vegetarian. The heaviest is Bacon Mac & Cheese at 530. If you are watching the number, the size matters more than the soup does: a bread bowl adds 650 calories whatever you put in it.
There is one Panera vegan soup: Black Bean Soup. Cream of Tomato, Mexican Street Corn Chowder and Mac & Cheese are flagged vegetarian. The rest contain chicken, beef broth or bacon. These are Panera's own menu flags rather than a certification.
Panera does not certify any soup as gluten free, because the same kitchen handles bread all day. Black Bean Soup and Mexican Street Corn Chowder carry Panera's "gluten conscious" flag as a cup or a bowl, which means the recipe has no gluten ingredient but the cafe cannot rule out contact. The flag does not carry over to the bread bowl version, which is the sourdough round itself. If you have coeliac disease, that distinction matters. For the full picture see our allergen menu guide.
None of the cups are. Panera puts the high sodium flag on 6 of the 9 bread bowls, so on this part of the menu it is very largely the bread carrying it rather than the soup. The two macs are the exception: their bowls are flagged as well. If sodium is the thing you are watching, the size you choose matters more than which soup you choose.
Panera does not publish sales figures, but Broccoli Cheddar is the safe answer. Panera has sold it since the 1990s and it is the most widely stocked soup on the menu: we found it priced at 2,233 of the 2,239 US bakery-cafes we checked, so very nearly every cafe in the country carries it.
Broccoli Cheddar is the usual answer and the consistency is why: it is thick enough to sit in the bread rather than soak through it. French Onion works for the same reason, with the melted cheese sealing the top. Cream of Tomato is the one to avoid, because it is thin and acidic and softens the base before you are finished.
Yes. Group tubs serve 6 to 8 and run $22.39 to $29.39 depending on the soup, with the two macs at the top of that range. They are ordered through catering, and the notice your cafe needs is shown when you order.
Yes, through the Panera app for Rapid Pick-Up or delivery, and through DoorDash and Uber Eats. Soups travel well in their sealed containers. Bread bowls are the one thing that does not: the base softens, so it is worth ordering that size only for collection.
